Crochet Dress Creates Interest

You might find it surprising that a crochet dress could create a storm of interest – after all, isn’t crochet just a “granny thing?”

Well, a design by Pucci worn by LeAnn Rimes to her wedding reception did just that – it was the centre of a lot of interest.

Gone are the days when crochet work was thought of simply as a way of senior ladies passing their time, making doilies, afghans and such like for the home. Now it is “in” to crochet garments and accessories as well as items for your home decor.

When fashion designers discover something and try to make you think it’s their own new idea then you know it is more than acceptable.

The great thing about crocheting is that once you have mastered the actual skill you can make anything you want. You can produce items of clothing which can be very fashionable and trendy.

You won’t be embarrassed to admit that you have made something yourself. These items will no longer be considered ‘home made’ they will have been ‘crafted’ and there is a vast difference in how people perceive these two terms.

As with any other craft, when you begin to crochet you have to learn the basics before moving onto the ‘good stuff’. Don’t be impatient with yourself. Determine to learn the basic stitches and practice till you produce good even stitches, all the same. Nothing looks worse than tight and loose stitches in the same piece of work.

It’s worth spending the time at the start to master stitches, so practice until you are completely comfortable with them.

One way to learn quickly is to watch videos and the site below has very concise and clear video instructions. If you check out this site you will see that at present they have 39 videos, more to be added over time, plus many patterns for projects and everything that will be added in the future is accessible for all time for a simple one time payment.

Learning how to hold your hook and yarn is something quite personal. Somebody else can show you how they do it, but their way might not feel comfortable to you. Experiment until you find a way of holding your hook and yarn that feels comfortable to you and that would enable you to crochet for quite a length of time without feeling any undue strain.

Learning how to read a pattern and understanding all the abbreviations is another important aspect. However, once you have learned you will be able to follow any pattern.

Watching videos is definitely a great way to learn to crochet. The person who first said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ was not wrong. The written word is good but nothing beats actually seeing something happening live in front of your eyes.

And of course the videos can be played and replayed, until you really understand what you are doing. For me, at least, it is much easier than trying to figure out written instructions.
